Travel agencies not allowed to recruit overseas workers

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration yesterday warned job applicants anew to shun travel agencies that offer overseas jobs.

Administrator Hans Leo J. Cacdac said POEA operatives has padlocked the two offices of World Travel and Booking Express in Baguio City for engaging in the recruitment of OFWs without the appropriate license from the POEA.

World Travel and Booking Express is reportedly owned by a certain Evangeline A. Torres and was allegedly recruiting factory workers for Japan.

Some applicants alleged that Torres charged them P10,000 for slot reservation, P16,000 for processing fee, and P3,750 for medical test and was offering rebate to anyone who will refer other applicants to her agency.

“Travel agencies offering overseas jobs are considered illegal recruiters because they have no license to do so. Job applicants  should always make sure they are dealing with a legitimate recruiter with job orders approved by the POEA,” Cacdac said.

Cacdac said the POEA Anti-Illegal Recruitment Branch is preparing charges of illegal recruitment against Torres. END
