Cyprus clubs make Filipino entertainers prostitutes

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration warns applicants for work as entertainers to be cautious of the existence of a prostitution network in Cyprus.

POEA Administrator Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz said some nightclubs in Cyprus are hiring legitimate Filipino entertainers but force them to work as prostitutes.

The Philippine Embassy in Athens reported cases of Filipino entertainers who were coerced to offer sexual services to costumers of night clubs where they were hired to perform as singers and dancers.

Baldoz cited the case of seven (7) Filipino artists who sought refuge at the Shelter for victims of Sexual Exploitation in Limassol. The women escaped from two nightclubs where they were legally employed. They reported that they were forced into prostitution under threats of violence and blackmail.

Recently, four Cypriot  men were arrested for pimping and forcing two Filipino singers into prostitution, also in Limassol.
